  Water Pollution

Water is essential for life and plays a vital role in the proper functioning of the Earth's ecosystems. The pollution of water has a serious impact on all living creatures, and can negatively affect the use of water for drinking, household needs, recreation, fishing, transportation and commerce.

   Monitoring of Surface Water Quality

Water quality survey of River Kabul and River Swat has been completed. Concentration of Coliform bacteria in river Kabul water is 1600/100 ml of water as compared to WHO standard of 3/100 ml of water. Main source is the untreated municipal effluents from the major cities. Three treatment plants were established for Peshawar; however, the same are not working to their full capacity. In river swat water quality is better except at some points where the hotels/discharge their effluents directly in to the river. A survey of such hotels was conducted and notices were issued to the owners. Some of the hotels have now established septic tanks for their effluents. EPA, Malakand office will be now in a better position to conduct monitoring.

Drinking Water Quality Monitoring in TMAs (Peshawar, Hangu, Kohat, Haripur, & Mansehra)

Under the Local Government Ordinance (LGO) 2001, Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) is responsible to provide pure drinking water to the public. Provision of pure water requires complete knowledge and training for serving the purposes. EPA, NWFP in collaboration with UNICEF is engaged in monitoring drinking water quality, developing a sanitary inspection Monitoring Protocol for five target areas (Peshawar, Kohat, Hango, Haripur & Mansehra). Work in Peshawar and Hango is in final stages while monitoring in the remaining TMAs will be completed during the current financial year.

   MUNICIPAL EFFLUENTS

  • As a result of continuous lobbying, three Sewerage Treatment Plants are established in Peshawar city, while one was already working
  • In response to complaints from the residents of Hayatabad against the untreated municipal effluent released openly due to limited capacity of the Treatment Plant, several meetings were held with the authorities.
